Cem G & Rg (disco! Productions)

I first attended & heard Cem G & RG at my first Disco! Productions event just over a month ago. A perfect sunny day in NYC on the roof of Bar 13. I arrived early that day to catch up with friends that I don't get to see as often as I would like...but when Cem G & RG began their set it was a Silent Exchange all the way around. We didn't need to catch up by talking, just dancing next to one another sharing the moments was enough... well for me at least :) ...They new what we wanted and they delivered tight mixing and a perfect sexy groove to the whole afternoon to keep those smiles on our faces, twinkle in our eyes, and of course they keep us coming back for more... Cem & RG did two very special sets for thatswhatfriendsarefore.blogspot.com you can find the second one below Listen, Dance, Enjoy!

Arcan Vargi ‘Rg’ & Cem Güvendiren ‘CemG’ were born in 1985 and grew up in Istanbul, Turkey. They started DJing at an early age under the ’disco!’ moniker. They both moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue their Audio Technology and Recording Arts degree. In LA they have played in top class venues including the VIP Room at Vanguard, Hollywood. Over the years they have acquired an ever-growing fan-list and the number of events and gigs increased, both in the USA and Turkey.

In 2008 disco! decided to spend more time in the studio than on the road. They had great gigs for the summer, including the South America Music Conference ‘08 in Quito.

2009 started out with their first EP release -Tek from the sub label of Proton Music, [Elefant]. They started hosting minimal techno parties in NYC at Bar13 with one of New Yorks finest dj Memek. For the Winter Music Conference week in Miami, they performed at The Family Party - PS14. As their interest grows in Audio Technology they are looking forward to producing more tracks with the inspiration they get from their surroundings…

SLNTEXCHNGE 02 Vadim Svoboda's (Lessizmore/Schieber)

Photobucket

I am proud, and eager to introduce to you a french artist who knows what dedication, passion, and practice makes “perfect” is Vadim Svoboda.

Vadim is an artist I was lucky enough to experience a few weeks back for his debut at Gourmet (NYC) which was also his first public live set. He may have kept us waiting until 10am, but he delivered more than promised.

I really don’t need to say to much about Vadim and he isn’t the tell all biography kind of guy anyways (he wants it that way). It will come across to you in his special live set recording. But because I feel I should share what I did get out of him....

Vadim has just released this past May “Plastic Guitar EP” with Lessizmore, along with “Smooth Running Hare EP” in 2008 on Schieber.net (05) under the alias Kevin Svoboda (first release on Beatport).

He has spent the past four years “locked” in his studio working on music. Ok not literally but close enough. Vadim isn’t the abelton live act we all have grown use to ....its much more complicated but I will let him explain.

Interview by : Faisal Hamadah

FH: Vadim, we’d like to thank you for taking the time to answer these questions. First, as you recently played your first live set, can you explain what you see as the difference between live electronic music and a set spun by a DJ?

VS: I would like to thank you for asking me, feel free to ask as many as you want!

Basically a live set and DJ set should work in similar ways in terms of editing and mixing. It still functions as a continuous movement of rhythm. If there was one main difference, it is that during a live set, a performer is performing their own tracks while a DJ is spinning a tight selection of other people’s music. This makes it much easier, in my opinion, to play with tracks you have made to reach the desired progression. If you know your tracks and their parts you can be as precise with the movements as you want. Because my memory isn’t very reliable, I personally have a little book that I keep with shorthand references to the parts of the tracks. The other difference is that you can edit tracks in real time. You can be more in touch with the needs of the people dancing in front of you, and this opens the door for you to improvise.

FH: How do you personally go around preparing for your live sets? It sounds like it takes quite a lot!

VS: It starts with the conception of a track. When I make a track on the machines, I let the pattern grow for hours and decide if it works better live or as a studio recording. Some tracks just deserve to be listened at one specific time on a dance-floor, some on a nice pair of speakers at home as many times as you want. If I decide to use the track live, I just keep playing it live in my room over and over, sometimes adding things, sometimes taking them away. It will even happen that I take parts of an old track that was missing something and put it into a new one. Like any instrument though, with these machines practice is the most important thing.

FH: What are these machines that you work with?

VS: You know, I haven’t been sponsored yet, so I don’t want to reveal any of my tricks haha! In seriousness, I work with two machines. The first, which I use for rhythm, is an Elektron SPS1UW Machine Drum. I produce the bass lines, the leads and everything else on an Elektron SFX 60 Monomachine.

FH: How do these machines influence your sound and the way you make music?

VS: The machines both have a very recognizable sound. They’re not like a computer program, and it’s more of an organic process and sound, which is why I prefer them. However because of the 32-step pattern structure of the machines, you can’t envision the entire structure of the track. This is a limit that can be overcome by imagination and creativity, and an ear for improvisation. I have to focus more on the feel and keeping the ‘trip’ of the music continuous and congruent. The machine drum UW also allows me to bring in a sufficient amount of samples to enrich the rhythm, and add unexpected layers.

FH: How would you personally classify your sound?

VS: You tell me! ...I try to focus on the relationship between rhythm and bass, and the sound I go for tends to be droning, hypnotic, and very groovy.

FH: Who are the producers that you think have influenced you and your sound?

VS: Easy, my list of inspirations would include DJs and producers like Matt John, Magda, Matthew Dear, Troy Pierce, Daze Maxim. As I was too lazy to take sound classes, I learned most everything I know about techno from just listening to those guys. I have infinitely techno-obsessive conversations with my crazy friend Roberto, and that’s where the rest of my education comes from.

FH: You played your first actual live set at Gourmet, and since then you’ve had a plethora of appearances from places ranging from rooftops in Brooklyn to clubs in the West Village? We just want to ask: What took you so long to actually share your stuff with everybody?

VS: I’ve been recording for a while, and have several releases already, but when it came to actually performing I wanted to be completely sure I was ready. I wanted to come out when I felt I had something truly communicative but still retained an intensity that was strong enough to keep people dancing. When people aren’t dancing, both the performer and the crowd are disappointed. Mostly though, I needed somebody to kick me in the butt and get me out there, and luckily the Gourmet guys went through a lot of hoops to get me to perform that night (or day, depending on how you look at it.) Luckily, people liked that performance, and now I’m getting more requests to play.

FH: Where do you see your music evolving from here? Is there anything you would like to do?

VS: For now, I’m definitely sticking with the machines. I want to maintain a pureness and simplicity to my music that I feel is very important to electronic music. If anything, I’m thinking of adding a small sampler to add things like glitches, vocal samples, and acoustic instruments to the shows, but nothing too glaring. I’ve also heard people talk about toys for kids, like diction machines or ‘School Bus to the Zoo’, being modified with a pitch control and analog outputs. Connected to a T-Resonator, maybe you can make crazy noises live with those things!

FH: You are leaving New York soon, after recently gaining a name for yourself as an up-and-comer worth watching. What’s next?

VS: Well I have one last live set here. After that, I’m going back to Paris with all the new courage that performing in New York has brought me. I have a show lined up my first day back there on July 5th, and after that, we’ll see!

SLNTEXCHNGE 01 Marcel Knopf (Mo’s Ferry/Rrygular)

Personal Touch:

Finally the time has come...

I am proud to present to you Marcel Knopf (Mo’s Ferry/Rrygular)

The first time I saw Marcel was my birthday weekend 2008 for Mo's Ferry / Rrygular Night at Watergate. My first Berlin Summer was just beginning and with guests in town from Paris, NYC, London...it was a weekend I will never forget.

Marcel took over the dance floor at what I believe to be around 6/7am....one track he played that I will always remember “I’m lonely” by Hollis P. Monroe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkCPkC8k4To&feature=related) He seems to have this classic touch to his mixes....never gets old, but always moving forward.

As writing is not my strength I will keep this short....If your not familiar get familiar! Marcel has informed me he has recently stopped working his day job to concentrate on his upcoming album (Fall 2009) expected release. I am anxiously waiting... especially after my preview of his upcoming release “Dusty Dance EP” out July 10, 2009. ....Enjoy the Mix. I sure did :)

Biography:

"Homework"! The Daft Punk Album of 1997 changed the view for electronic music of many people, so it did for Marcel Knopf. He became frenetic with collecting vinyl with the aim to stand behind the counter one day: Together with Matt John (Perlon) he founded the record store "Sine Music" in Nordhausen, in 2000. Their tiny, pretty but illegal parties in the basement of the store were a cell of Minimal in Thuringia, what was lacking that kind of music. He became resident DJ of the club "Alte Weberei".

"Sine Music" was a meeting place for DJs and offered musical alternatives. So it was just a matter of time until the Mo's Ferry guys Dapayk and Jan Langhammer met him. Soon after Marcel took over the A&R of the label Mo's Ferry Prod.

Since 2002 Marcel Knopf works together with Dapayk on own tracks. "Holpergeist EP" was the beginning of experimental club releases and gave a special sound to the label. "Sine Music" opened a subsidiary in Berlin but went bankrupt after a break-in and sinking sales figures. Marcel moved back to his native city Berlin.

Marcel continued working for Mo's Ferry. 2006, he compiled and mixed the "bits to phono" compilation, which tracks came all from netlabels. In a time of an increasing enthusiasm for digital DJ methods and release ways he took up the cudgels for the Black Beauty: Vinyl. Another 12inch "Lloyd/Narain" followed on Mo's Ferry's sublabel RRYGULAR.

Marcel Knopf's DJ sets cover a wide range of music and reflect his preferences for Dub, House, Broken Beats and experimental Techno. Fresh, different but floor-orientated.

Crazy or just in Love?

Friends,

Thank you for taking interest and supporting the thats what friends are fore project! I am pleased to announce the first Artist podcast will be Saturday May 23 2009, this will also include a personal Introduction to the artist, bio, and short interview. I want to share a little more with you of how this date and concept has come about, something some may know, and some may not.

EVERYTHING happens for a reason, whether we choose to accept that or not is our own decision. In my situation I accepted, and this is how it all began….

Why this day? Well as silly as it may sound to some it’s the day “techno changed my life” hehe

Exactly two years ago on this date I was brought to my first Electronic Music Party by one of the few friends I connected with during my time at The Fashion Institute in NYC. He said you will probably hate the music, but the people it brings together are amazing. I was ready for change during this time, especially with graduation just a week away….and a whole summer ahead of me.

So off I went on that Wednesday night, to Bar 13 where the makeup party was taking place (the previous one was the first shut down by the nypd, & also should have been my first) …not really sure what to expect anxious, excited, and a bit nervous. I have to say the timing was pretty good artist playing that night included Pan-Pot, Exercise One, & of course Memek. I stepped foot for the first time in a Minimoo/ Bar 13 and what went through me when I heard the music, saw the people, and felt the vibe…was well unexplainable. Strange to say, but I never looked back on a lot of things from that day on…and for the better believe me.

It just takes that one moment, that “being in the right place at the right time” kind of attitude to find something you’ve not really been searching for, but waiting for.

After about six months of running around Manhattan, Brooklyn, Long Island City; in clubs, roof tops, warehouses, lofts, beaches, you get the idea…I realized a lot in the course of that time, and one of the most important for me was that it wasn’t really about partying (not saying I don’t LOVE to party) but it was something a lot more. It was the whole package the natural vibe, the people it came with, how the music just changed my world in one split second… it was an understanding, it was respect, it was passion, it was LOVE….

So off after doing very little research and without knowing what I was going to do exactly I decided where I should go next, (naturally) hehe….A city I had never been to, barely heard about, didn’t know the language, had one friend in which I met just weeks before departure (couldn’t have asked for a better friend =) What I did know was that my friends and my intuition were telling I would be just fine so my destination?

Berlin had to be Berlin.

What a journey the past two years have been, the amazing friends I have made, the MANY obstacles I have faced, self surprising moments, adventures, once in a lifetime experiences, motivations, opportunities, epiphanies, synchronicities, connections, objections, understandings, curiosity, dedication, appreciation, Pure BLISS.

So why was this project created? As I had posted last week when the idea came to mind.

This project was created solely for my music enthused mind, & for my friends in electronic music that continue to inspire me every day. To give exposure to those that haven't received any, and for those that already have, but continue to evoke our minds day in and day out....

And for those chasing after something they love, never give up “give time to the time” a good friend once said to me when those obstacles get in the way…its up to you to make things happen for yourself, no one else can do that for you.

As I appreciate all genres of electronic music my focus in this blog with be on House, Tech-House, Deep House, Techno, Minimal, Dub-Tech,…

Be safe Be well

Always,

Meghan
